In a significant step towards promoting inclusive and effective learning, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the implementation of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-2023) guidelines, starting with the 2025–26 academic session. A major directive under this framework is that schools must use the mother tongue or home language as the primary medium of instruction for children in the Foundational (Classes 1 and 2) and Preparatory (Classes 3 to 5) Stages. This move is in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes multilingual education and encourages learning in one’s native language during the formative years. The CBSE has advised schools to make the necessary preparations, including updating teaching materials and providing training to educators for smooth implementation. Experts believe that teaching in the mother tongue helps children grasp concepts more effectively and nurtures a deeper connection with their cultural and linguistic heritage. CBSE's directive is expected to bring a major shift in how early education is delivered across India.
